Photography Workshop: Photojournalism with your Smartphone

Who: Grades 7 -10

This workshop is designed to teach students how to tell their stories through photography.  It will be taught by Jon Brack, an experienced photojournalist based out of Washington, DC, who specializes in telling humanitarian and environmental stories. Students will learn:

  • Techniques for shooting strong, editorial photographs
  • Skills for editing through their work and picking the strongest images
  • How to assemble the key photographic components for a complete visual story
  • The process of learning from constructive critique
  • How to produce a blogs, digital slideshows, and Instagram stories to share their images and ideas with the world

Students will need a smartphone with a camera for this class.  No other equipment will be needed, nor will be required to purchase later.

The workshop will be a combination of classroom and outside classroom work.  Students will decide on a story they want to tell and then develop that idea through to a finished product of their choosing.  Classroom time will be spread out over 3 days with 3 hours for each session. Students will then be required to work on their projects between classes.  5 students are needed at a minimum to conduct the class with a maximum class size of 10.
